Why counting twice makes the drawer less accurate

The Drawer Was Right the First Time. The Recount Made It Wrong.

Five reasons the second count is where a bar drawer goes wrong, and the counter that reads the value of every bill so the first number is the one you sign.

A bar manager sets an unsorted drawer of mixed bills into the Kountr counter in the back office after closing

The whole drawer goes in unsorted and comes out as one dollar total · Kountr™ Mixed Bill Money Counter

Last call at 1:45, lights up at two. By two-thirty the bartenders are at the diner, and the closer is in the office with three hundred singles and a pile of rubber bands.

She counts the drawer once, then again, because her name goes on the sheet. The second count comes out forty dollars off. Her heart is in her throat until she finds it: a stack of ones counted twice, on the recount.

The first number was right. The recount is what put the forty dollars in.

Hand counting a drawer is two jobs: every bill gets sorted into its pile, then every pile gets added into one total. Each job hands a tired person its own chance to slip, whether that's a five in the ones, a stack of nineteen banded as twenty, or a number typed wrong into the phone. A recount runs both jobs again on the same tired brain at the end of a ten-hour shift, so the second total carries fresh mistakes of its own.

Now two totals disagree and nobody can tell which one is wrong, so the drawer gets counted a third time while the fries go cold at the diner. Rubber bands, a second person counting and the old bill counter in the office never fixed it, because every one of them still leaves somebody sorting and adding by hand at two in the morning.

Kountr takes both jobs off the closer. It reads what every bill is worth as it feeds through, so the sorting and the adding happen inside the machine and one dollar total comes up on the screen, the same way every time.

Five Things That Change in the Office at Close

Kountr counting a mixed, unsorted stack of bills
01

The Whole Drawer Goes In Unsorted, Singles and All

Kountr reads the denomination of every bill as it passes through. Ones, fives, tens, twenties, fifties and hundreds can sit in the same stack, in whatever order they came out of the register. Square the stack, set it in the top hopper, and in MDC mode it starts counting by itself.

That's the whole sticky note: don't sort it, just drop it in. The ones never get split from the fives, and nothing gets added up on a phone.

iBefore the stack goes in, pull out clips and rubber bands and flatten folded corners. The bills stay mixed.
Pressing DETAIL on Kountr shows the count broken down by bill
02

Press DETAIL and the Count Sheet Is on the Screen

When the count stops, the 3.5" color screen shows how many bills went through and what they add up to in dollars. Press DETAIL and it breaks the total down by bill: the count of hundreds, twenties, tens, fives and ones, and what each pile is worth.

That's the sheet closers fill out by hand at the end of the night, and the number that used to rest on the closer's word alone. When the owner asks how the drawer came out, the breakdown answers for itself.

The free customer display shows the same count and total. Turn it toward the bar at tip-out and the whole staff watches the same number come up.

iCount, total and breakdown on one screen, so the notepad and the phone calculator stay in the drawer.

03

One Count You Can Sign, Then Everyone Leaves Together

The second count exists because nobody trusts the first one. At the end of a ten-hour shift a hand count of a mixed drawer slips somewhere, and the only way to find the slip is to run the whole drawer again.

Kountr counts the same stack the same way every time, and two in the morning means nothing to a machine. Run the drawer, read the total, write it on the sheet and lock the office.

The "U coming?" text gets answered from the booth at the diner.

“Totally worth it if you need to count cash fast, or if you get easily distracted counting and have to start over.”Facebook review

04

The Bachelorette Fifty Gets Checked Before It Goes in the Bag

A bar takes cash from strangers all night, and the big bills show up when the room is busiest. Kountr checks every bill three ways as it counts: ultraviolet, magnetic ink and infrared, plus size, half-note, chained-note and double-note checks.

When a bill fails, the count stops and the screen flags it, so that one bill comes out before the deposit bag is sealed. Nobody has to hold fifties up to the office light at 2 A.M.

A straight answer on worn bills: bar singles get folded, soaked and crumpled, and a very worn or older-series bill can get flagged too. Check any flagged bill by hand before setting it aside. That's true of any counter that checks for fakes.

iUV, magnetic and infrared on every bill, at counting speed.

05

What the Recount Costs Next to What Kountr Costs

If the recount takes twenty minutes a close, five closes a week, that comes to about 87 hours a year of a manager in the office after everyone else has gone home.

At the $7.25 federal minimum wage, 87 hours is about $630. Kountr is $249.95 during the Black Friday sale, with free US shipping and nothing to subscribe to, so the price on the page is the only price there is.

Mixed-bill counters with fake detection run from about $250 to over $400. Kountr comes in at the low end of that range and still does the part a bar needs: mixed counts, a breakdown by bill, three-way fake checks, batch mode and a customer display.

For the closer

The Bar Owns the Drawer. The Count Has Your Name on It.

When a drawer comes up short, nobody asks the owner what happened. They ask the closer. The closer is the one who needs the proof, so the closer is the one Kountr protects, the same way a chef buys her own knives.

Why the Black Friday price right now: Kountr is a small business, and this is the one time of year the price comes down. Every counter that ships in November is one we're not racing to deliver in the December rush. When the sale ends, the price goes back up.

Timing for bars: orders take about a week to process and 3 to 7 business days to arrive. Ordered now, it's counting drawers before Thanksgiving Eve, one of the biggest bar nights of the year, and it's settled in for the holiday parties and New Year's Eve.

What cash-heavy businesses add next
The counter is everything you need. This is what the regulars reach for later.

The Care Kit, a dust cover and sensor-cleaning sponges, because clean sensors keep the counts clean. For the deposit bag or the safe there's a fire-resistant cash pouch, and a receipt printer with thermal paper puts the count and the breakdown on paper for the owner every night. None of it is required, and all of it is on the product page when you're ready.

30DAY
Run a real Saturday drawer through it first

Count your actual bar cash with it for 30 days: the Friday and Saturday drawers, the tip pool, the envelope in the safe. If the closer still ends up counting twice, or you're unhappy for any reason, email kountrsupport@gmail.com within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the purchase price. The one-year warranty covers it after that.

Before you order

What Closers Ask First

We already have a money counter in the office. Why another one?

A basic counter tells you how many bills went through, and the sorting and the adding still land on the closer. Kountr reads what each bill is worth, so a mixed drawer comes out as one dollar total with a breakdown by bill.

Will it handle beat-up bar singles?

Pull clips and rubber bands and flatten folded corners first. Very worn or torn bills can get flagged by the fake-bill check, so look at any flagged bill by hand and set badly damaged ones aside for the bank.

How long until it gets here?

About a week to process, then 3 to 7 business days in transit. Orders placed in early November land before Thanksgiving Eve.

What if it doesn't work for our bar?

Run real drawers through it for 30 days. If it doesn't end the recount, email kountrsupport@gmail.com within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the purchase price. Parts are covered by a one-year warranty after that.

Is there an app or a subscription?

Neither. Plug it in, set the stack in the hopper and read the screen. There's nothing to download and nothing to renew.
